Field Development Planning

Building on Reservoir Fundamentals and Prospect Evaluation and Risking, learn how a discovery becomes a sanctioned development: appraising to narrow the range, choosing a depletion strategy and well count, sketching a production profile, selecting a development concept, and costing it through to NPV, IRR, payback and a Final Investment Decision. Short videos, interactive labs, quizzes and a synthetic case study that takes Prospect Ada's discovery to an FID recommendation prepare you to explain field development in a graduate interview and contribute in an assessment-centre group exercise.

What You'll Learn

  • Explain the field life-cycle and the stage gates from discovery to the Final Investment Decision (Appraise, Select, Define, Execute, Operate), and how contingent resources (1C/2C/3C) become reserves (1P/2P/3P)
  • Design an appraisal programme that targets the uncertainties that matter, and use value of information to decide when to stop appraising
  • Choose a depletion strategy and well count from the drive mechanism, recognising pressure maintenance and diminishing returns per well
  • Sketch a production profile — build-up, plateau and decline (quoted as first-year effective decline + b) — and relate plateau rate, facility size and EUR
  • Compare development concepts from onshore/swamp flow stations to deepwater FPSOs, including tie-back vs standalone, gas handling without routine flaring and produced water
  • Read development economics (CAPEX, OPEX, ABEX, NPV10, IRR, payback, break-even price, tornado), weigh risks and Nigerian stakeholders, and argue an FID recommendation
