Production Engineering & Optimization

Building on Reservoir Fundamentals and Field Development Planning, follow the oil from the reservoir to the export line and learn how a production engineer keeps a field flowing: completions and sand control, nodal analysis, artificial lift, the flow station, flow assurance, surveillance and optimisation, and well integrity and HSE in the Nigerian setting. Short videos, interactive labs, quizzes and a synthetic case study that takes Ada four years past first oil prepare you to explain production engineering in a graduate interview and contribute in an assessment-centre exercise or a graduate production-engineering rotation.

What You'll Learn

  • Trace the production system from reservoir to export line and explain why pressure is the currency of production, using oil rate, water cut and GOR
  • Explain a well completion (casing, tubing, packer, SCSSV, perforations), sand control for poorly consolidated Niger Delta sands, and how skin, acidising and workovers affect a well's productivity
  • Read a nodal analysis plot — composite IPR (PI and Vogel) against the tubing (VLP) curve — find the operating point and predict how pressure, water cut, GOR, wellhead pressure and tubing size move it
  • Explain why wells die, compare gas lift, ESP, rod pump and PCP, optimise lift gas with the equal-slope rule and size an ESP in hydraulic horsepower
  • Describe a flow station and its capacity limits, diagnose flow-assurance and well problems from their symptoms, and rank optimisation opportunities by incremental oil per dollar or payback
  • Apply well integrity, HSE and the Nigerian setting (NUPRC, PIA 2021, flaring commitments, security) to a production plan, and present a well review with a clear recommendation
